Uppu (Urad dhal) Kozhakattai

let us learn how to prepare Uppu Kozhukattai by following this easy Kozhukattai recipe.This is a savory variation of Kozhakattai filled with spicy urad dhal mixture.

 Preparation time: 10-15 min       Cooking time: 10-15 mins
Serves: 4-5

Ingredients needed for the Uppu (Urad dhal) Kozhakattai stuffing: • Urad dal -    1/2 cup
• Green chilli –    4-5
• Hing/asafoedida -    a pinch
• Salt as required

For Seasoning: 

• Oil     2 tsp
• Mustard seeds   1 tsp
• Urad dhal     ½ tsp
• Grated coconut    2 tbsp
• Curry leaves few


Step 1: Soak urad dal for 1 ½ hours.Drain the water and grind it with chilli, hing and salt coarsely.
Step 2: Steam it in an idly pan for 10-15 minutes.
Step 3: After it cools, crumble it well. You can use the mixie for this-just whip it for a second.
Step 4: Heat 2 tsp of oil, add mustard seeds, when mustard splutters, add urad dhal,curry leaves and the steamed crumbled dal. Mix it well. Remove from flame. Our stuffing for Uppu Kozhakattai is ready now.

Method to make Kozhukattai: 
Step 1: Now take the rice flour dough and make small lemon sized balls. Greaseyour palms with oil, keep the ball and flatten it into round shape or a mini cup with the other hand. You can dip your fingers in water and oil mix, if needed to make it easier. 
Step 2: Place a heaped tsp ofstuffing and seal the edges as shown in the picture above. Repeat the processfor the rest of the stuffing.
Step 3: Arrange all the prepared Kozhukattais on a greased steaming plate and steam cook for five to seven minutes or till done. 
Step 4: Wait for 10 minutes to cooldown and then transfer on to a plate.

 Your Uppu Kozhakattais are now ready.
